Feast of the Holy Family

My Dear Parishioners,

The Fifth Joyful Mystery of the rosary meditates on the story of finding Jesus in the Temple. It could also be called the first of Mary’s “mysteries of protest”.

Mary, as a Jewish woman was schooled in the traditions of the prophets. She knew searing complaints are prayers as genuine as praise and petition. Searching the Gospels, we can find a good number of mysteries of protest she could have taken to prayer.

After the interchange in the Temple, “mystery No. 2” might be expressed as: “Will someone explain why he went alone into the desert amid the wild animals?” No. 3: “I know he said his time had not come, but weddings need wine!” No. 4: “He called them all his mother?” And so on. These “mysteries” don’t really surprise experienced parents; they just nod and say, “You never know what to expect.”

The Feast of the Holy Family offers the opportunity to reflect on the mystery of family life. In reality, every family shares perplexing, frustrating, and demanding challenges. Mary and Joseph faced the difficult discovery that Jesus was not going along with them every step of the way. It is a real story of family conflict and is symbolic for all kinds of relationships.

Every family has its share of challenges. We know what it is like when family members do not go along with us on the journey. When Mary and Joseph confronted Jesus in the Temple, they confronted the fact that he would have to discover his own path in life. No matter what they had hoped for him, he did not belong to them.

The story reminds us that love is rooted in profound reverence for the mystery of the other. Such reverence cultivates profound respect for the others mysterious freedom. We learn to desire that the other will become who they are meant to be rather than what we would have them be.

Siempre Adelante,

Monsignor Liam Kidney
Pastor

VOTIVE CANDLES FOR

YOUR INTENTIONS

We are happy to announce, you are now invited to come into the church to light votive candles at our Blessed Mother shrine for your own intentions, or in memory of your loved ones.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE A MASS SAID FOR SOMEONE?

A lovely way to remember a deceased loved one, a recently deceased friend, parent of a friend, or relative, or someone who is ill, or perhaps just a friend you would like to honor, is to have a Mass said for them. Each day and weekend a Mass is offered in memory of a deceased person, or for the intentions of someone who is ill, or perhaps whose birthday is that day.

If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, you can contact the parish office at 310-454-1328, come in person, or email jane@corpuschristichurch.com with the name of the person, if they are deceased or living, and if you are requesting a specific date. Please note that the annual Mass book fills up quickly, and often specific dates are booked well in advance. You can pick up a card to send to the person or their family so they will know when the Mass is being said, and that you are thinking of them. We can also mail the card for you. We would love to honor your request, so give us a call!
